It all began when the Virgin Mary appeared to a shepherd who bathed the foot he had hurt in the spring and was healed. Soon afterwards a bathhouse was built on that spot and the place was called the “red fountain“.
The history of the place continued along the same lines as the legend, with an awareness for health. As early as 1460, Dr. Ulrich Ellenbogen, the city doctor of nearby Feldkirch, used the healing water of Rothenbrunnen. The chequered history reached its current in 2005 when Lorenz Bitsche took over the ownership of Rothenbrunnen. In 2006, a separate waterpower station was constructed, the building was renovated and a front garden with an arbour was established.
The Bitsche Family takes great care of this wonderful gem, which is located in the Biosphere Park in the Grosse Walsertal Valley.
